What should you look for in a snowboard? If you find a snowboard sale you are halfway there since a lower than average price if you can get is always a good idea and always more money for other equipment. The next step is looking for the board that is right for you and not necessarily just like the ones everyone else seems to have. This needs to be the board that fits your experience level, height, weight, and is built to do the kind of snowboarding you enjoy.
It is best when you are first starting out to either borrow or rent equipment. This gives you a chance to get a feel for how you like the sport before making a major financial commitment to it and buying a lot of equipment. This also gives you a change to discover what is right for you as far as snowboard, boots and clothing. A snowboard sale might be a good start too with good equipment at more affordable prices.
You will need to think about the conditions in your area or where you will be snowboarding the most. Is the snow most often hard packed or icy? For this type of environment a stiffer board might be the best idea. If the snow in your area is softer and powdery than a softer board will usually ride better.
You do not have to look for a particular brand even though you might have been told friends or other riders that only 'such and such' board is any good, or that the best snowboarders all use a certain brand name. Pick the board that suits you best. This is a board to use and possibly to compete with, not to wear like a status symbol. Do not let anyone push you into buying a board that feels wrong no matter what the price.
The best way to find the length is to measure using your own body. Place the board on one end of the floor and hold the other against yourself. The board should hit somewhere between your chin and nose. Don't get a board that goes over the top of your nose since it is too big and the board can get away from you when you are moving fast. Sitting the board on the ground put your feet in the boots you will be wearing on the board. Do they fit or does the heel or toes hang over the edge? The board should have a width that completely covers your booted feet.
When pricing your board keep in mind that you will also need a binding system which since some cases can cost almost as much as the board. Try the bindings out as some like the step-in bindings can feel very restrictive or get snow clogged easily, and you do not want to find out you cannot use this type at the top of a hill. Select the board and bindings that feel the most natural, and if you find a good snowboard sale, so much the better.
